Let’s face it, either your intranet works really well and everyone is on board or it’s a graveyard for documents and the company rule book. What it should be is the place to start the day and an essential part of your organisation’s business process. Here are five tips to get it right.

1 Make it relevant
Understand the different needs and potential needs of your various user types in the organisation. Do your research. Get people involved and really develop expectations around what you are doing. Then make it relevant to people and ensure that there is a real incentive for people to use it. For example make it the place to get important information or the latest news each day. It could be where they sign-up for a pension scheme, submit holiday requests etc.

2 Make it the business
What processes do you see around that could benefit from using the intranet? There are many ways to create self-service opportunities, automate tasks and generally make life easier. Find these and you make a direct impact on cost reduction and the finance people will love you.

3 Plan to integrate
Too often the intranet is developed in isolation. Make the intranet an integral part of your overall communications mix. Consider its unique role in relation to other media, hard copy documents, notices etc and emails or meetings.

4 Deploy iChampions
Develop a network of intranet champions at different levels and across the organisation. Champions can demonstrate the benefits, promote better use of the sites and help create excitement and interest.

5 Walk the talk
The best way to get people involved with the intranet is to do the training. It’s a great way to explain the benefits, demonstrate the value and at the same time get feedback about what else the intranet could be offering.
